NORTHFIELD -- The Select Board took up local event business at its Sept. 29 meeting, approving a policy change to streamline special event permits for recurring events and signing off on this fall's Monster Dash 5K.
COMMUNITY -- The board approved the Northfield Monster Dash 5K, set for Oct. 24 from 7 a.m. to noon, with fees waived because the event is run by a non-profit organization. Under a new special event permit policy adopted at the same meeting, the race's approval is good for three years rather than requiring annual re-submission, so long as no major changes, such as a change to the course, occur. Organizer Terry told the board the event's format has stayed largely the same from year to year and said the group could use more volunteers, noting shrinking numbers available through the organizing church. Board members said organizers would still need to coordinate with the town administrative assistant, police, fire, EMS, highway and sewer departments ahead of the event, and suggested recurring events like the Monster Dash could get a short mention under board announcements or on the town website going forward.
